When things don’t go your way, do you take responsibility or does it just seem easier to make a bunch of excuses? Have you ever considered how those excuses are affecting your life? When we make excuses about why we couldn’t or wouldn’t do something, we are at that moment putting a lid on our potential. In other words, we are throwing doubt on our ability to get things done, which subsequently influences what we believe we are capable of doing. Those limiting beliefs will of course grow stronger over time and affect every aspect of our lives. You can however stop making excuses, and here’s how to work through six of them.
EXCUSE 1: There’s just not enough time…
Yes we all have plenty to do, in fact we are all overloaded with commitments and responsibilities, and there’s just not enough time to get things done, right? Well, that’s what we tell ourselves, but is that the real honest truth? Or is it simply a story we tell ourselves that helps justify our actions? When you catch yourself indulging in this excuse, consider for a moment whether you are actually ‘making the time’ to focus on your highest priority activities. Maybe you need to set some clearer and more meaningful goals. Or just maybe you need to work with more purpose and urgency in pursuit of these objectives.
EXCUSE 2: There’s just not enough money…
We can’t all be rich and wealthy. Things are expensive and there’s just not enough money to go around, right? Have you however considered that just maybe you don’t have enough money because money simply isn’t a priority in your life. With this in mind, how about generating some money making ideas? How about garnering the support of family and friends who can help you figure something out? How about showing some determination for once, and committing yourself to earning more money? In the end, you get what you deserve. Figure out how to work smarter and harder than anyone else, and you will be rewarded.
EXCUSE 3: I just don’t know how…
We can’t all be geniuses, right? I mean, some people are just naturally gifted and talented, while others just seem to have a knack for doing things really well. As for me, well I just don’t know how. I don’t know what to do or how to get started. I just don’t think I am even capable of understanding this stuff. Just maybe though you are actually quite capable, but just don’t know it yet. Instead of making excuses, commit yourself to the practice of your craft. We all know nothing before we get started. And if at any time you get stuck, then ask for help or seek out inspiration that can help you move forward in a better way.
EXCUSE 4: I just can’t change…
We are the way we are, and unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about it, right? While others vigorously pursue their goals, I just don’t have it in me to do the same. Changing the way I am is simply impossible. I just have to resign to the fact that I am going to be miserable for the rest of my life. But wait a minute… maybe the only reason you don’t believe you can change is because you don’t have enough reasons to change. There’s absolutely nothing on the line, and nothing pushing you forward. Start building small new daily habits with consistent effort. Only in this way will you begin making progressive changes.
EXCUSE 5: I’m just not ready yet…
Wait a minute, I’m not quite ready just yet. I have to plan and prepare and cut my toenails before I even think about getting started. There’s just all this stuff to know and learn. Yes, I can do it, but I need more time. Or just maybe what you need is a little different perspective. You see, those who start the race are already ahead of those who don’t. Yes, they might not have it all planned out, but that doesn’t stop them from moving forward. No plan you create will ever be perfect, and you will never truly be ready. You just need to begin with one small step at a time. Everything else will work itself out as you move along.
EXCUSE 6: This just won’t work…
I’ve heard that you believe that this thing you’re doing just simply won’t work. I mean, you’ve tried absolutely everything to make it work, right? Or have you? Whatever you believe you can’t do, there’s someone else doing it right now. They made it work, so why not you? Instead of making excuses, consider how to get the job done. Moreover, don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes and even failure are valuable experiences as long as you learn and then adapt your approach moving forward. Success is after all a numbers game. The more times you try, the better your odds of getting things right.
