Allow Room for Change…

While growing up everything probably seemed new and unfamiliar. It was this way because we lacked experience and understanding. However, curiosity and fascination drove us forward into the unknown. We treated every experience as a learning opportunity that helps us grow and understand the world in a better way. Yes, of course we made mistakes and tripped over many times, but that’s expected when entering into the unknown.

Stepping into the unknown is like walking into a dark room. It’s pitch black, so we don’t know what might be lurking around the corner. As a matter a fact we don’t even know what lies beneath our feet. However, over time as we experience this new environment we become more familiar with what is there, and with familiarity comes confidence and self-assurance. In fact, spending enough time within this environment will sooner or later lead us to a light switch. When the lights go on we no longer face the unknown. We can finally see what is there. Yes, there might still be some fear and uncertainty, but at least we know what we’re dealing with.

This is at least how a child approaches their world. Their curiosity and fascination leads them into that dark room. Yes, the room might feel uncomfortable at first, however over time that feeling dissipates and is replaced with understanding and comfort.

So why is it that as adults most of us no longer have that sense of curiosity and fascination when it comes to stepping into the unknown? It just might have something to do with the habits and rituals we develop over time. It might also have something to do with the limiting beliefs that hold us back.

As we grow up and gain more familiarity with the world, we naturally come across certain boundaries and rules that prevent us from moving forward. We are taught that crossing these boundaries often leads to pain in the form of discomfort, disappointment, punishment, unhappiness, etc. In fact, often we might even experience this pain first hand. This of course leaves a lasting impression on our minds and on our emotions. And so we develop boundaries that protect us from experiencing that pain in the future.

These boundaries of course define our comfort zone. Within this zone we are safe and secure. We rarely experience the harshest of pain, however we probably do still experience a painful restlessness that takes us back to our childhood curiosity and fascination with the world. There has to be more to life than this, right?

The sad thing is that nobody ever taught us that pain can often lead to positive change. In fact, any change, even a change for the better is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomfort. And yet most of us resist change and continue to cling onto our comfort zones.

The greatest accomplishments over the course of human history have not been comfortable. In fact, individuals the world over had to step into uncertainty, had to beat adversity, had to break through their fears, and had to overcome their problems to reach their goals. They had to do this because there was no other way. In fact, sometimes they had no choice because change was forced upon them. But as we’ve already discussed, entering a dark room will often stir up some form of discomfort. That’s perfectly natural and okay. It has to be expected. What’s not okay is walking away from the opportunities that lie hidden in the darkness.

These individuals used discomfort as a platform and opportunity for learning that eventually helped them reach their goals. They had to consciously move through the pain in order to create a better life and world for themselves.

Action Points

You no doubt have goals that you would like to achieve. However, lying in the gap between you and your goals is the discomfort zone filled with uncertainty, fear, problems and pain. There is absolutely no way to jump across this gap. You must consciously move through the pain in order to create a better life for yourself. Consider for a moment:

  • How is my comfort zone preventing me from moving forward?
  • What am I missing out on by clinging onto my comfort zone?
  • What goals would I like to achieve?
  • What sacrifices might I need to make to achieve these goals?
  • What adversity and pain might I need to go through?
  • How will I gain value from experiencing this pain?

If you want your life to change, then you must change. And the only way to change is to pursue something that lies beyond your comfort zone. Face the discomfort. Learn and grow from the experience. A better life is yours for the taking.

[space height=”30″]

Just Take the First Step…

To do it, or not to do it? That is the question. Yes, that might be the question, but thinking about that question really doesn’t get us anywhere, does it?

Many times we end up stuck doing very little because the goal lying before us just seems too overwhelming and difficult to achieve.

We see the goal as a huge mountain that must be climbed. And of course this mountain is steep and there are many bounders and trees blocking our path. It just seems too arduous and taxing to even comprehend that we will ever successfully reach the summit. However, what if your goal wasn’t at the top of a mountain? What if we could view the goal from a slightly different vantage point?

Let’s imagine for a moment that the mountain suddenly morphs into a giant staircase. Yes, your goal is still far off at the top of this staircase, however the difference now is that there are clearly defined steps that can direct you towards that goal.

Now, of course looking up at this gigantic staircase can be quite an overwhelming experience. In fact, the staircase might be so large and your goal so high that you can’t even see where it ends. Or worse, a fog might set in and prevent you from seeing any more than two or three steps ahead.

This can of course be somewhat concerning. Not being able to see more than a few steps ahead can bring about fear and uncertainty. Who knows what exists beyond that third step? Who knows whether or not there is even a fourth step? What if it’s a really big step that forces you to exude a little more effort? There’s just too much uncertainty there. And uncertainty of course leads to fear. Maybe you should just wait for the fog to clear up… maybe one day… someday… or maybe not.

Why in the world do we need the fog to clear up? Can’t we just take the first step? Do we really need to see the entire staircase before beginning our journey? Even if we saw the entire staircase it would be next to impossible to climb the whole staircase with one step. So either way we can only take one step at a time, so why not take the first step we see?

Take that first step… yes you… right now! What happened? What do you see?

By taking that first step you now have a new vantage point. You are one step higher along your journey and one step closer to your ultimate goal. Yes, of course being a little higher doesn’t mean that the fog has suddenly cleared up, however what it does mean is that you might now be able to see an additional step ahead. And even if it’s just one single step, then that’s all you need to step forward once again.

After every step you take you will gain a new vantage point of the staircase, and sooner or later the fog will clear and you will see your goal in full view. But the only way you’ll get there is to keep stepping forward one step at a time.

Of course every step will not be equal. Some steps will be significantly bigger than others and will require more energy and effort on your part. While other steps will be small and easy to walk over. But then of course you need to be aware of those slippery steps that might trip you up and knock you back down the staircase. This is of course okay and expected. After all wherever there’s fog there is ultimately always some condensation which can cause you to lose your footing. But you will learn from this experience and will know better next time how to navigate these slippery steps when you get to them.

Just keep climbing. Keep climbing one step at a time. The higher you climb the more you’ll see and the closer you will be to your ultimate goal.

[youtube video_id=”ulcOKbNxXzA” width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

The next time you feel kind of stuck, hesitant or overwhelmed with the thought of achieving a goal, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What’s my first step?
  • What one thing can I do right here right now that will help me move closer to my ultimate goal?
  • What challenges might I face when taking this step?
  • How will I overcome these challenges?
  • What’s my next step?

Just keep climbing higher and higher one step at a time. The higher you climb the more you’ll see. You don’t need to see the whole staircase, just take that first step. Eventually the fog will clear and your goal will come into full view. Just trust the process.

Becoming Resourceful

[space height=”30″]

Becoming More Resourceful…

We all know from experience that life is filled with problems. Day-in, day-out we experience them and deal with them, sometimes successfully and other times poorly. Problems are just a part of life — a part of living. In fact, would life really be worth living if we had no problems at all?

This is an interesting question because it brings up the idea of a Utopian society where everything is perfect. There are no problems and there are no worries. Everyone is happy, fulfilled and at peace with their life, relationships and circumstances.

On the surface a Utopian society sounds incredible. All the world’s problems have been solved and we can live out the rest of our lives in perfect bliss and harmony. It’s of course wonderful to think this way, but a world without problems is a world in a state of stagnation. Without problems there is little motivation and challenge. We therefore get complacent and accept the status quo. As a result nothing moves forward and nothing new is ever created.

Our problems help us learn, grow, develop and advance forward in a better way. In fact, all the advancements throughout human history have been made because someone saw their problems as an opportunity to do something that nobody had done before. These people took the initiative to solve a problem and created something new — something better.

Problems encourage us to think differently about our lives and circumstances. We are forced to break the status quo; to go against the conventional rules of how things should or ought to be. And as a result we gain new insights that lead us down unconventional paths towards a better way of doing things.

Our problems are not our burdens, they are rather blessings that help us create new opportunities to better our lives and the lives of those around us. However, to overcome your problems takes resourcefulness.

To understand the true meaning of resourcefulness, let’s take a look at a black sludge that had no real use for thousands of years. It wasn’t until the back half of the 19th century that it came into prominence as something that had value. I’m of course referring to oil in the form of petroleum.

Oil is nothing more than a black sludge formed over millions of years from the decay of once-living organisms. However, it’s one of the world’s most important resources today for one reason and one reason only: because we were resourceful enough to use it for many things in various ways.

Oil is used to fuel cars and jet planes, it’s used to create synthetic rubber, cosmetics, perfumes and even fertilizer. This black sludge has a great many uses today because we were resourceful enough to use it in ways that helped us solve a variety of problems.

Back in the day before we discovered a practical use for oil it was nothing more than an inconvenience — a dirty problem. A black sludge that stuck to our shoes polluting the land and our water supply. Little did the people of the time realize the value of what they were standing on. They just didn’t have the necessary insight and the resourcefulness to turn this problem into something that could better their lives. So many opportunities were missed because they failed to recognize the possibilities.

Right now, you are standing on an oil well of opportunities waiting for you to become resourceful enough to see them. Yes, I mean you! The problems you are trying to avoid may very well be incredible opportunities that can turn your life around, however because of a lack of resourcefulness you fail to see them in this way.

But how do we develop resourcefulness?

Being resourceful begins with curiosity. You must approach your problems with genuine curiosity. Be childlike in your approach and show a willingness to ask insightful and at times seemingly silly questions. These questions will force you to think of new possibilities that may very well help turn your problem into an opportunity you never expected.

[youtube video_id=”eMEs3k_bWtY” width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

Whenever you are faced with a problem, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What happened? What’s going on here?
  • Why is this happening? Why this way, and not another way?
  • What assumptions am I making about this problem?
  • What’s another way (silly way) I could look at this problem?
  • What if this problem was an opportunity?
  • What if this problem was a blessing in disguise?
  • How could I use this problem to my advantage?

You are more resourceful than you probably give yourself credit for. In fact, there are only unresourceful attitudes, not people. Every problem presents the seeds of opportunity for a resourceful mind. It’s now up to you to grasp it.

The 20 Second Rule

[button href=”https://iqdoodle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/20-second-rule-iq-doodle-wd-background.jpg” icon_size=”5″ class=”” target=”” color=”flat” dimension=”small” icon=”None” animation=”” animate=”” animation_delay=”0″ ]Wide background[/button] [button href=”https://iqdoodle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/20-second-rule-iq-doodle-sd-background.jpg” icon_size=”5″ class=”” target=”” color=”flat” dimension=”small” icon=”None” animation=”” animate=”” animation_delay=”0″ ]4:3 background[/button] [button href=”https://iqdoodle.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/20-second-rule-iq-doodle.pdf” icon_size=”5″ class=”” target=”” color=”flat” dimension=”small” icon=”None” animation=”” animate=”” animation_delay=”0″ ]PDF[/button]

[space height=”30″]

The 20 Second Rule…

Every lifetime is blessed with innumerable opportunities that come flooding our way. Some of these opportunities of course come in the form of problems, setbacks and challenges. While other opportunities don’t really seem advantageous until weeks, months or years later when the fruits of our labor and efforts come to full view.

Often however there is a big problem with opportunity because it’s riddled with uncertainty, risk, the unknown and the possibility of failure, rejection and the potential of getting hurt. As such we often hold ourselves back from grasping these opportunities because we just can’t bear to go through the pain.

Consider for a moment that every opportunity you pass up you may never get again. And if it does come around again, it might not be the same. Yes it could be better the second time around, but it could also be worse. You just never know. As such it’s absolutely paramount that we take stock of ourselves during these pivotal moments of our lives and take full advantage of what life has to offer.

But of course this is easier said than done.

We are all riddled with fears about an uncertain future. It’s of course natural to protect ourselves from getting hurt. But it’s often these things that lead to hesitation and inaction. We of course understand the incredible pleasure we might experience if we take this action, but the short-term pain is just too much to deal with in the moment.

It’s important to understand that anything that leads to uncertainty could potentially be riddled with pain — or not. Because things are uncertain you really never know, do you? You have absolutely no idea how things will turn out if you take a specific action until after the ‘act’. Likewise you have no idea how others will respond to something you do or say until after the ‘act’.

The probability of experiencing some form of pain or discomfort might seem high, but that could have something to do with your imagination. Anything we are afraid of doing we tend to exaggerate in our minds. We expect the worst to protect ourselves against taking action. What if instead of expecting the worst you anticipated the best? How would that change how you view the situation?

Have a think about for a moment the opportunities you failed to grasp over the course of your life. Maybe you didn’t approach someone you liked, maybe you said “no” to something that could have been of value, maybe you didn’t act because you feared making a mistake, or maybe you avoided a problem thinking that it was a burden but in retrospect could have turned into something great.

We all no doubt have these pivotal moments in our lives where we reach a fork in the road. We can turn one way or the other way, or maybe we just stand where we are and decide to go back — back into the cozy confines of our comfort zone. But is this really how life should be lived? Is this really how we get the most out of ourselves and live life to the fullest? Probably not.

At the end of your life you will regret the things you didn’t do rather than the ones you did. In other words, you will regret the opportunities you didn’t take because you were too afraid at the time.

Everyone fails. Everyone makes mistakes, and everyone gets hurt from time-to-time. That’s life. Everything is a learning experience. And in order to experience life to its fullest we must be willing to take chances, risks and go out on a limb. And it’s much easier than you think.

All you need to do is follow the 20 Second Rule.

Just 20 seconds of insane courage is all it takes. Just 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery, afterwhich you can pull out if you need to. But what you will probably find is that within 20 seconds your perspective of the situation will shift. What might have seemed scary or difficult at first may now look very different, and that’s essentially all you may need to build the momentum to make the most of this opportunity.
[youtube video_id=”NTnoCMzbSUM” width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

The next time you are fearful, feeling embarrassed or uncertain about doing something ask yourself:

  • If I do this, what’s the worst that could possibly happen?
  • How will I deal with the worst case scenario?
  • If I do this, what’s the best case scenario?
  • How could I display insane courage for just 20 seconds? What then?

Whenever in doubt follow the words of Benjamin Mee,

“You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.”

[space height=”30″]

There is Never a Right Time…

Are you waiting? Are you waiting for that perfect moment when everything is just how it’s supposed to be before you take that action, complete that project, pursue that goal, or take that chance? Have you considered that just maybe there is never a right time?

Imagine for a moment waking up tomorrow morning. You get out of bed, brush your teeth, take a shower, get dressed for work and get into your car all ready to drive to the office. But then you wait… and wait… and wait for all the traffic lights to turn green before starting the engine. And so you wait… and wait… and wait… until the work day passes you by.

“Oh well. I guess I can try again tomorrow morning.”

You step out of your vehicle, walk back inside, eat dinner, watch some television, and go to bed ready to give it another shot in the morning.

This sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Who in their right mind would wait until all the lights turned green before heading off to work? Unless you live in the outback or around the corner from your office, the chances are that at least one red light will halt your progress along the way. Expecting that all the lights will be green and that you will breeze past them, especially during peak hour traffic is absolutely insane. And yet this is how most of us approach our goals.

We set a goal and then we wait. We wait for that perfect moment to take action. We wait for all the stars in the universe to align in an ideal way. Yes, we essentially wait until all the lights turn green before moving forward. All the lights must of course be green before taking action. Things must be certain. God forbid you get stuck at a red light for an extended period of time. This would completely derail your efforts. Right?

We fear the red light because it brings about uncertainty. What if the light never goes green? What if I don’t pay attention and miss the moment the light turns green? What if the light turns green for only a few seconds and I’m stuck behind traffic and can’t get through? Or what if ALL the lights turn red? That would completely derail my plans.

Your journey toward that goal is never a sure thing. It’s inevitable that you will come across red lights. These red lights are obstacles along your path that slow you down and give you time to think about where you’re heading and how you’re getting there. Therefore when a red light stops you, it’s no time to sit there moaning and complaining about it. It’s time to reflect. Sometimes you may very well need to just wait-out the red light, however other times it might be of value to take a detour — to travel along a path that you might not have planned for.

The path towards your goal is rarely if ever a straight line. And it’s almost never how you expect it to be. You will come across red lights and traffic jams that delay your journey. God forbid you might even fall prey to a flat tyre. You will also come across roadblocks that force you to take a different path then the one you originally planned for. You can of course turn around and go back home, but then you’ll never get to the office, and you won’t get paid.

Yes, we must be very careful of those detours. Those detours might not only delay our journey, but they may also take us the long way around. We might even get lost, and then what if we run out of fuel? What if we have no cash? What if there is no fuel station near by? What if… what if… what if?

There are many things that might go wrong along your journey. But you will never get anywhere unless you start where you are with what you have. You must just trust that you will work things out as you move along. In the end, there is never a right time. You just need to take that first step and trust that you will work things out as you move along.

[youtube video_id=”YMcG-2eCYs0″ width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

The next time you catch yourself waiting for that perfect moment to take action, ask yourself:

  • If there is never a right time, then what is it specifically that I am waiting for?
  • What’s the probability that all these things will line up perfectly?
  • What if I had taken action on this three weeks ago? Where would things be right now? Would I be further along?
  • What if I started right here right now? What progress could I make by next week, next month?
  • So what if things go wrong? How will I handle them?

All you need to do is just start your journey. Even if you don’t know what to do, you will work things out as you move along. There is never a right time. Just trust the process.

[space height=”30″]

Just Keep On Trying Until…

Have you ever pursued a goal but ended up quitting halfway through? You tried and tried your best but you just weren’t good enough, strong enough, experienced enough, or smart enough to pull it off. Yes, I’m sure we’ve all been there at one point or another.

Have you ever wondered, “what if?”. What if you stuck at it for a little longer? What if you didn’t listen to those naysayers? What if you tried a different approach? What if you hadn’t made that mistake? What if you asked for help? What if you accomplished what you set out to do? What would life be like today?

It’s understandable to reflect on these types of scenarios. After all we learn most from a defeat. When we are defeated or succumb to failure we often reflect about what went wrong and what we could have done better if we had another chance. On the other hand when we are victorious we often get lost in our own self-pride, and as a result we learn nothing from the experience.

Defeat helps us learn and grow if we are willing to sit with our thoughts and reflect on the situation. This period of contemplation can bring new insights, ideas and methods for moving forward in a better or different way. We can then use this new found knowledge to try yet again… and again… and again until we succeed.

Some people of course never quit, but they don’t get anywhere either. They fail to learn from the experience and as a result they continue doing more or less the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. This is not where we want to be. I bet you want to move forward in a better way after a defeat — that in essence is the key to success.

Pick a person… any person who has accomplished anything of significance in this world and they will often tell you that they accomplished great feats because they kept on pushing forward despite the setbacks and obstacles standing in their way. In fact, often they made their greatest breakthroughs at their lowest point when problems and adversity had them by the neck. But they persisted and persevered with determination, guts and creativity through these challenges until things finally turned in their favor.

The person who experiences no problems is a person who doesn’t take the necessary risks to pursue their biggest and boldest goals. Only those who venture out on a limb and take a chance on themselves face adversity. And yet it’s this adversity that makes them grow stronger and bolder. It’s exactly this adversity that challenges them to think in new and creative ways. And it’s this adversity that gives them the incentive they need to try yet again.

Those who achieve great things in this world do so despite rejection, criticism, judgment, failure and mistakes. The journey is of course never easy, in fact it’s a great struggle that takes incredible patience and willpower. However, these individuals use adversity as a fuel that pushes them forward even harder each time they try yet again. Nothing stops them because they believe that they will eventually find a way through… they will eventually get the breakthrough they need to accomplish their goal.

Sometimes all it takes is a little more effort, a little more patience, or a little more hustle. Every little thing makes a difference because you never really know how close you are until you have that goal securely in your hands. In fact, a great many people quit literally inches away from the success they desire to have. If they only knew they were inches away before they quit, their life might be very different today. Just maybe you are one of those unfortunate souls. Then again, just maybe you are inches away right at this very moment and you don’t even realize it.

If your goal is important and meaningful enough then you will keep trying and pushing forward until you grasp it firmly in your hands. There is no other way. There are no shortcuts to success. It’s a tough slog. Are you ready for the battle?

[youtube video_id=”WsZrBP4xZ38″ width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

The next time you feel like quitting while pursuing an important goal, ask yourself:

  • Why do I want this? Who am I doing this for?
  • Why is it important I pursue this till the very end?
  • What will I miss out on if I fail to accomplish this?
  • How can I use this setback as fuel to push me forward?
  • What else could I try? How else could I approach this problem?

Remember, most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all. Will you be the next to join this exclusive club?

The Big Stinking Problem…

What’s that smell? Can you smell it? It’s right there… it’s right in front of you. Can you see it? Oh yes, it’s your stinking problem.

Life is of course full of problems. Some problems are relatively small and insignificant that we handle with ease. There are also transitional problems that if ignored for long enough, eventually disappear. But then there are those BIG stinking life problems that we have no idea how to tackle. These are the kinds of problems that just hang around like a bad smell that never goes away.

The problems that life throws your way can be very disruptive. These problems often come at us at the worst possible time and in the worst possible way. And ignoring them just doesn’t work. It just seems as though the universe is out to get us — preventing us from living the life we want. But there’s actually a good reason for this.

Problems are there to help you. They are the stepping stones that will move you forward. With every problem you face you learn something new, something different, something that will help you along your journey towards your goal.

To ignore or skip a problem is like jumping over a stepping stone. You incorrectly assume that this is a shortcut, however this couldn’t be further from the truth. To skip a stone is to forgo the lessons that it has to teach. And it’s precisely these lessons that you need to learn in order to tackle the next problem successfully. In fact, it’s very possible that if you try to skip over a stepping stone that you will slip and fall flat on your face. There are no shortcuts to success. There are no shortcuts to your goal. All the lessons must be learned without question before moving on. But how do we tackle these problems? How do we tackle them successfully?

It’s important to understand that there are no insurmountable problems, there are just ineffective approaches to a problem. It’s like trying to climb a mountain over a vertical cliff face when there is a stairway on the other side that takes you all the way to the summit.

Most people never see the stairway because they are so use to climbing the mountain a certain way. They tackle this mountain the way they’ve always tackled this mountain, whether it worked for them in the past or not. They are literally blinded by their own habitual thoughts about the problem and see no other way up to the summit.

To be more specific, the reason why these people are unable to overcome their problem is because of the habitual questions they continue to ask themselves. In fact, the only thing standing between them and a solution to their problem could very well be one simple questions:

“Is there a better way to climb this mountain?”

Most people never ask this question, and so they never even realize that there is a stairway on the other side waiting for them to climb. They stick to what they know and continue to ask poor and ineffective questions that get them nowhere.

Climbing that cliff face is no doubt an arduous and difficult task. They try and try and yet the mountain of dung beats them every time. And so their problem lingers around and continues to stink up the place. If only they learned to ask better and more effective questions that would help them find a better way to the summit.

A solution to the problem always eludes these people because they continue to think about their problem in exactly the same way they did the last time they tackled it. This just doesn’t work.

The mountain of dung that you are being forced to climb is just one of many stepping stones you must cross along your journey. As you approach each stepping stone it will present you with a different set of challenges. You must approach these challenges with an open and flexible mind. You must dare yourself to ask a different set of questions. Questions that will challenge you to think differently about your problem.

[youtube video_id=”YFrhgV4s5a4″ width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

When confronted with a big stinking problem, ask yourself:

  • How have I approached this problem before?
  • What worked? What didn’t work so well? Why?
  • How haven’t I yet tried tackling this problem?
  • What other options could there possibly be?
  • How have others tackled this problem? What can I learn from them?
  • How else could I potentially think about this problem?
  • What am I currently not seeing that could be of value?
  • What if I tried…? What then? How about…?

It doesn’t take a lot of effort to ask better questions, however it can make all the difference to the way you tackle your problem.

Set Challenging Goals

Set Big Challenging Goals…

Have you ever wondered what separates the top achievers from everyone else? Could it be their level of ambition? Probably not. You too probably have some big goals that you would like to achieve, and yet these goals continue to elude you.

Maybe it’s their determination and perseverance that separates them from the pack? It’s no doubt true that these two attributes can certainly make a difference when pursuing our goals. However, both determination and perseverance mean very little if we lack the focus required to stay the course until its completion.

Staying focused means directing your mind and body to one definitive course of action. It means committing fully to a goal and staying on the path up until the moment the goal is achieved. Yes, there will no doubt be obstacles, setbacks and distractions along the way, but high achievers don’t allow themselves to get side-tracked by these things. They stay focused and what they must do until their objective is firmly in their hands.

On the other side of the coin there are many ambitious people in this world who consistently achieve very little in life. They have all these big and wonderful goals that they would like to achieve, and yet weeks, months, and years pass without much progress. Why is that? What are they lacking?

These people are lacking the focused-attention and commitment required to stick to one goal and follow it through to the end. Yes they have big goals. But the problem with these big goals is that it takes a mammoth effort to achieve them.

Attached to each of our big goals are big risks and many obstacles. These things make the path toward these goals very difficult indeed. And for those lacking the necessary focus, concentration, determination and perseverance, it’s very easy to become disheartened when progress gets impeded.

Those who don’t achieve much in life struggle not because they lack ambition, but because they are too easily sidetracked trying to accomplish lesser goals that are just more comfortable and easier to pursue. They are distracted from their big goals by smaller goals that have very little long-term value.

The downside to pursuing easy goals is that there are normally very low rewards and scarce opportunities for growth. On the other hand, big goals are far more difficult to attain, but they come with high rewards and incredible opportunities for growth.

We grow when we are tested, when we struggle, and when we reach the limits of our own capabilities. Yes, it’s when we are challenged that we grow the most. Therefore the easy path is rarely ever the best path when it comes to long-term growth and development.

Every time you choose to go down the easy path to a lesser goal you are at that moment saying ‘no’ to the incredible opportunities for growth that would await you if you had chosen the more difficult path. It’s the distracting properties of the easy goal that is keeping you from pursuing the goal with greater rewards and growth opportunities.

[youtube video_id=”WtwSFLyIGjU” width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

Have a think about the goals you are currently pursuing and ask yourself:

  • What are my big goals? (high risk and high reward)
  • What incredible growth opportunities exist when I accomplish these goals?
  • What progress am I making right now toward these goals?
  • Am I being sidetracked or distracted by any easier goals?
  • How are these easier goals impeding my progress?
  • Do these easier goals need to be accomplished? Right now?
  • If they do, then could I delegate these easier goals to someone else?
  • What must I do to ensure I stay focused on my highest priorities at all times?

As you work through these questions keep in mind that you are kept from your main goal not by obstacles but by a clear path to an easier goal that is keeping you from reaching your full potential. The choice of course is always yours to make.

You can either choose the easy path with little risk, no obstacles and low rewards, or you can choose the more difficult path that is littered with numerous obstacles but incredible rewards and growth opportunities. The choice again is yours to make.

Wealthy vs. Poor Daily Rituals…

There are those who are born into wealth and then there are those who are born into poverty. Those born into wealth are the lucky ones, right? They have the best education, they have a comfy lifestyle, they literally have anything and everything they want handed to them. Life is certainly good when money is abundant.

Those born into families who struggle financially or that live from paycheck to paycheck unfortunately do not have those same luxuries. They can’t afford the same level of education, they need to make do with the little they have, and nothing comes easily. In fact, it seems as though everything is difficult to come by and life becomes an endless struggle.

Being born into an underprivileged family might not give you the same opportunities as other people who are born into abundance and wealth, however the life you were born into doesn’t need to define who you are for the rest of your life.

Every moment, every day you have a choice. You can either accept your circumstances as they are or you can do something about them.

Many people who came before you were born with far less opportunities than you have right now. However, these people weren’t satisfied with their circumstances. They didn’t accept things as they were. Instead they decided that if things were to change then they needed to change.

There are many stories of people born into poverty or into an underprivileged family who eventually became self-made millionaires and billionaires. These people didn’t make excuses for the life they had, they instead used their circumstances as fuel that helped them to create a better life for themselves and their family.

Your circumstances should never define your entire life. Circumstances are temporary — fleeting moments of your life. Yes, of course accept these circumstances. This is very important. But don’t indulge in these circumstances by feeling sorry for yourself or for your life.

The great thing about circumstances is that circumstances change. However, they only change if we are willing to take the necessary actions to change them.

Self-made millionaires and billionaires at one point decided that their circumstances must change — that their life must be different. And so they took massive action in a new direction that transformed their destiny. But how did they do this? How did they escape from a prison that many people succumb to?

There are of course many factors that cook the ingredients of success, however for the purpose of this discussion let’s look at six opposing daily habits/rituals that separate the wealthy from the poor.

  1. The wealthy write down their goals daily to help keep them focused. The poor also have goals but their goals come in the form of reaching the next level in their video game.
  2. The wealthy keep a to-do list that directs their actions towards their most important goals. The poor don’t keep a to-do list. Instead they are constantly distracted and lacking focus.
  3. The wealthy listen to self-help audios and podcasts during periods of downtime. The poor get lost listening to music.
  4. The wealthy read books for 30+ minutes per day about topics that help them in the pursuit of their goals. The poor watch on average 5 hours of mindless television per day.
  5. The wealthy network regularly to build strong relationships to help them achieve their goals. The poor gossip regularly about other people’s lives to make themselves feel better.
  6. The wealthy get their day started early with an empowering morning ritual. The poor over sleep and then wonder where the day has gone.

[intense_spacer height=”15″]

If you desire to change your life then you must begin by changing your habits and the rituals that currently control your daily decisions and actions.

[youtube video_id=”cnPyNDCnUvw” width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

Take into account the daily rituals you indulge in and ask yourself:

  • What are my current daily habits/rituals doing for my life?
  • Are they helping or hindering the goals I would like to achieve?
  • Where am I wasting my time?
  • What does this mean for my future if I continue along this path?
  • What new habits/rituals would help keep me focused on my goals?
  • Which of the above rituals of the wealthy could I incorporate into my life? How?

It’s important to understand that everything counts. Absolutely everything makes a difference. Everything you do each and every day (the little and the big things) build your future. Isn’t it time you designed your destiny with purpose?

Smart Goal Setting

[space height=”30″]

How to Set Smarter Goals…

Whether we realize it or not, we are all setting goals each and every day. Of course some of these goals are small, short-term and quite insignificant. These are goals that you set daily about the things you will do, what you will eat, when you plan to sleep, etc.

Yes, these goals might not seem all that significant in the greater scheme of things, but there is something very significant about them. What’s significant is that you consistently achieve these goals without even thinking about them. And the reason why you consistently achieve these goals is because they follow the SMART goal setting formula:

Your daily goals are specific, measurable, attainable, ready and timed.

This is significant because if you already use this goal setting formula to set daily goals, then you can also use this formula to set larger scale goals that can measurably transform your life for the better. But before we get into that, let’s first take a look at what these five elements of goal setting actually mean.

Specific

When your goals are specific you are very clear about what it is you want to achieve. In fact, there is no question in your mind what it is you want. And it’s this clarity that drives you forward.

Measurable

When your goals are measurable you have clarity about what it will take to achieve your goal. There are no questions about the path you will take because you know exactly what you must do every step of the way in order to get to your end destination.

Attainable

When your goals are attainable this means that you wholeheartedly believe that you are capable of achieving these goals. In fact, there is absolutely no doubt in your mind that you have the necessary confidence and commitment behind your actions to achieve them.

Ready

Being ready means that you are at a point in your life where you will accept this goal. You are fully ready and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve this goal right now. This means that you are ready to make the necessary sacrifices that the goal will require of you.

Timed

When your goals are timed it means that you are clear when you will begin working on your goal, how long it will take you to accomplish your goal, and when you are likely to complete it.

Let’s now take a moment to think about all those little goals you are achieving each and every day. I’m talking about the little things such as planning what you will eat for dinner, washing your teeth before going to bed, taking a shower, calling a friend, etc. Have a think about all these seemingly insignificant goals and identify whether they fit into this SMART goal setting formula.

It’s likely that most of your goals actually do fit into this formula quite conveniently, even if you’re not consciously aware of it throughout the day. This is of course very significant because all you need to do now is use exactly the same formula to achieve your most significant lifetime goals.

The lesson from all this is that we already have everything within ourselves to accomplish whatever we desire. We have the necessary resourcefulness and tools at our disposal to bring those bigger lifetime goals into our lives. We must however bring our thoughts to the little things — those seemingly insignificant things that we take for granted. Because it’s within those things that we will find the answers to a better life.
[youtube video_id=”tbzI_2X-8rU” width=”640″ height=”300″ ]

Action Points

Have a think about your most important lifetime goals and ask yourself the following set of questions. These questions will lay down the foundations of the SMART goal setting process to help you set goals with more purpose:

  • Do I know what I want specifically?
  • How will I know I’m making progress?
  • How will I know when my goal has been achieved?
  • Do I believe I can achieve this goal?
  • Am I ready to pursue this goal?
  • Is this the right moment in my life to do this?
  • When will I start working on this goal?
  • When will I complete it?

Ask and then answer these questions for each of your long-term goals over and over again, and you may quickly discover that those big lifetime goals are closer to realization than you ever realized was possible.
